Resources for Parents

Children who need pediatric specialists are most often those with chronic and complex conditions. Some disorders are present at birth; others may develop suddenly or appear as the child grows. Your pediatrician or family practitioner will help you determine if a specialist is needed.

Most pediatric specialists are pediatricians who at some point in their training decided to specialize in a particular area of interest. This means they've finished four years of medical school, a three year pediatric residency program, and an additional three years in a fellowship program focusing on a specific subspecialty.

We encourage you to visit the American Academy of Pediatrics for a complete listing of pediatric subspecialists and a definition of what each does.

You can also find a Children's Specialty Physician by name and/or medical specialty.
